Ophelia's Bedroom was born from my desire to empower and enable women and men to explore their sexuality. Initially, it was just an idea, it then became a serious discussion, and finally with some help from a wonderful friend who ran her own business, as well as an extremely talented web designer I was able to transform a dream into something real.
My goal was to build a website that was first and foremost respectful to both women and men, and to their sexual orientation. It had to be visually pleasing, yes, I wanted a pretty site. I chose the peonie because they make me happy and soothe me, to me it was perfect.
Ophelia’s Bedroom had to be an environment that felt non-threatening and safe. My objective was to change the way sex and the sex toy industry were viewed and talked about. I know that there are other companies who are trying to achieve this and are succeeding, but I wanted to do it my way. The site had to have the perfect balance of sensuality and transparency. I wanted to normalise the purchase of sex toys, to empower women and men through education, information and a thoroughly researched range of toys.
Sexual health and wellness is such an incredibly important part of our overall health. But I honestly believe we don’t truly understand how being sexually well can change our lives. There are so many benefits derived from being sexually active, our bodies release oxytocin and endorphins during an orgasm which strengthen our immune system. We have more energy during the day, sleep more soundly at night. Sexual wellness is important for its psychological and emotional benefits. It has been proven that sex helps reduce stress and anxiety, increases happiness, and studies show that you do live longer.
Understanding what you enjoy, what fulfils your partner/partners needs are important factors that increase sexual satisfaction through awareness of our bodies. Sexual wellness is exploring your sexuality and desires. It's eliminating preconceived notions of shame. Sexual wellness is finding pleasure in yourself, its empowerment and for those of you with partners, it's delighting in enjoying this newfound confidence and knowledge with your someone special.
As a woman, wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, I want to be sexually healthy and look after my sexual well-being, it is, after all, an important part of our physical and mental health, and indirectly affects all of our relationships. I feel it's my responsibility to ensure my narrative about sex is a positive and healthy one I can share.
